The Challenges of Bringing New Plants to Market
Competing companies working on the same genus, other new plant companies going behind your back to visit your breeders, box store shipping requirements, general lack of consumer knowledge, and cheap prices; these are just some of the challenges we face in bringing new genetics to market. Gone are the days of the Knock Out® Rose and the first orange coneflower, when every nursery from here to Poland was calling to be the first ones to carry the product. Today's market is oversaturated with new plants and new plant look-a-likes, making it super challenging to actually find anything truly new and novel. What are we doing to overcome today's market challenges? How have we adapted to current consumer needs and desires? Plants Nouveau Founder and Co-Owner, Angela Palmer, will share her insight on the changes our industry has seen and how the new plant world will never be the same.
Angela’s career has spanned almost every aspect of gardening, garden design and teaching folks how to garden with plants – especially natives. Angela founded and now co-owns Plants Nouveau LLC., a company that specializes in introducing and marketing new plants to the nursery industry. She directed the Native Plants in the Landscape Conference at Millersville University for 14 years. Angela’s career has taken her around the world, experiencing world famous gardens and remote areas looking for new ideas and exciting plants. When she’s not in her backyard gardening, you can find her on the lacrosse fields coaching.
